Why should I consider tummy tuck surgery?

Dr. Brou specializes in body contouring and is known for the quality of his tummy tucks, also known as abdominoplasty.  This surgical procedure is done to tighten abdominal muscles, reduce the fat layer and remove any excess skin around your midsection.

Even patients with normal body weight can develop a protruding or sagging abdomen. There are many reasons for men and women alike to consider a tummy tuck surgery, including:

  • Pregnancy
  • Weight gain and/or weight loss
  • Skin laxity from aging
  • Previous surgical scars

Tummy tucks work best in patients close to their ideal body weight so it’s not a replacement for weight loss.  Tummy tucks can eliminate some stretch marks and damaged skin if located in the lower abdomen and around the belly button.  The remaining skin will look better after tightening.

How does tummy tuck surgery work?

During surgery, Dr. Brou will carefully make a horizontal incision between the pubic hairline and naval. The shape and length of the incision will be determined by the degree of correction necessary. Through this incision, weakened abdominal muscles are repaired and sutured while excess fat, tissue and skin are removed.

What should I expect during recovery from a tummy tuck?

After surgery, dressing will be applied to your incisions and you will be wrapped compression garment to minimize swelling and support your abdomen as it heals.

Dr. Brou does not use post surgical drain tubes with tummy tucks unless absolutely necessary.  Normally he will use internal sutures that make the use of drains unnecessary and therefore easier to recover.  You may be unable to stand fully upright until internal healing is complete, which can take a week or two.

You’ll be given instructions on how to care for the surgical site and drains (if necessary), what medication to take and what concerns to look for at the site or in your general health. Plan to have someone drive you home following your procedure as it will be uncomfortable and unadvisable to drive. You will also need to plan for someone to stay with you for a few days following your procedure. Some patients are required to stay overnight in the surgical facility.

What results can I expect from a tummy tuck surgery?

The final results may be initially obscured by swelling and your inability to stand fully upright until internal healing is complete. This may take a week or two, however once the swelling has subsided you should enjoy a smoother, firmer appearance and profile. Tummy tucks are permanent procedures; however proper diet and exercise to prevent weight gain are recommended to maintain optimal results.

Are there any risks associated with tummy tuck surgery?

A tummy tuck is a surgical procedure, and therefore risks are always involved as a result of receiving anesthesia as well as the procedure itself. Dr. Brou can help assess your unique health needs and advise you of any concerns to be aware of prior to undergoing surgery. Potential risks associated with a tummy tuck include, pain, swelling, irregular contours and loose skin, skin or nerve damage, infection, blood clots, fluid accumulation, scarring, bleeding or asymmetry.

Why should I consider liposuction?

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, can slim and even reshape certain areas of the body. Liposuction removes excess fat deposits in stubborn areas that diet and exercise don’t always reach. Some of the most common areas treated by liposuction include:

  • Abdomen, love handles and waist
  • Thighs and hips
  • Arms, neck and back
  • Chin

Ideal candidates for liposuction include adults within 30% of their ideal weight, with firm skin and good muscle tone. Patients considering liposuction should be healthy and free of life-threatening medical conditions or diseases which could impair healing.

It’s important to note that liposuction is not a weight loss treatment or an effective treatment for cellulite. Patients with stubborn areas of fat but who exercise regularly are the best candidates for liposuction.

What happens during a liposuction procedure?

Liposuction uses many small, inconspicuous incisions near the treatment area. First, a sterile liquid solution is injected into the treatment site. This solution reduces bleeding and trauma to healthy tissues. Then, a thin hollow tube also known as a cannula, is inserted into the small incisions, below the skin’s surface. Dr. Brou will slide the cannula in a back and forth motion to loosen stubborn fat cells. Those fat cells are then suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum.

Additionally, Dr. Brou offers tumescent and ultrasonic liposuction methods, which are not only safer than previously-used methods but also offer a faster recovery time and can produce results that are smoother and unsurpassed by other methods of liposuction.

If you have concerns regarding the appearance and location of your surgical scars, discuss these with Dr. Brou during your pre-operative consultation.

How much down time should I expect with liposuction surgery?

Most patients can expect about a week of downtime after liposuction. You will be able to get up and move around freely, but you will have swelling and some soreness. We will give you a compression garment to wear for the first month to help with the swelling. Often times, patients will wear their garment on and off up to 4 months following surgery. The swelling will take several months to completely taper off and it can feel good to have the extra support.

What can I expect as a result of liposuction surgery?

Just as every person’s body contour is unique, results of your liposuction procedure will also vary. It is important to discuss all of your concerns and goals with Dr. Brou. During your consultation, Dr. Brou will advise you of likely outcomes for your appearance.

It may take weeks or months for post-liposuction swelling to completely subside. As swelling dissipates, your new body contours will begin to appear and develop. It is important to maintain a healthy diet and to exercise after fully healed from a liposuction procedure.

Why should I consider Fat Grafting to Buttocks or “Brazilian Butt Lift”?

Though celebrities such as Kim Kardashian, Beyoncé, and Jennifer Lopez may have started the trend of emphasizing the buttocks, it has quickly spread across age and ethnic lines. Our Brazilian butt lift patients range significantly in age. Similarly, patient weight ranges vary widely. However, excellent results can be achieved regardless of age or body type.

During this procedure, Dr. Brou removes fat from an area where it’s not wanted—such as the abdomen or thighs—and places it into the buttocks. Essentially, this is a combination of liposuction AND buttock augmentation. While these numbers are not as high as those performed for breast augmentation, it does help to explain why it is one of the fastest growing cosmetic procedures today. In properly skilled hands, it is not just about increasing the size of the butt, but also about obtaining a shapelier butt, and recontouring the entire torso, including the waist, abdomen, and thighs.

How does fat grafting to buttocks work?

During your Brazilian butt lift procedure, Dr. Brou will harvest fat from areas where you have excess such as the abdomen, thighs, upper back (aka “bra rolls”) or arms. The right spots are going to depend on each patient’s individual needs. By removing fat from certain areas such as the abdomen and placing it into the buttocks, Dr. Brou can restore harmony to your body, accentuate your waist, and re-contour your torso. The end result is typically a narrower waist, a shapelier buttock and hip, and a sexier figure. When you come in for a Brazilian butt lift consultation, Dr. Brou will examine you from a 360-degree perspective, determining the best places for adding and subtracting fat in order to get you closer to your desired body. It is not a one-size-fits-all approach.

How much down time should I expect with fat grafting surgery?

Most patients can expect about a week of downtime after fat grafting. You will be able to get up and move around freely, but you will have swelling and some soreness. You will need to shift your weight from hip to hip while sitting on your buttocks for the first two weeks following surgery for optimal results. We will give you a compression garment to wear for the first month to help with the swelling. The swelling will take several weeks to completely go away.
