Why should I consider a fat grafting procedure?

The natural aging process of the face is due in great part to the loss of volume. This loss of volume is manifested as thinner lips, wrinkles and creases of the lips and cheeks, and bony or hollow appearance of the cheeks and eyebrows. Even though these issues can be improved with injectable fillers, a more durable result can be achieved with fat grafting. Fat grafting restores the volume loss of the aging face when carefully injected into specific areas. Fat grafting may be the right procedure for you if you’ve tried other cosmetic correction procedures without satisfaction for the following conditions:

  • Less than desirable lip fullness.
  • Stubborn wrinkles and facial lines.
  • Sagging around the middle of your face.
  • Deep lines and creases around your mouth or below your eyes.
  • Hollow cheeks or a loss of muscle tone.
  • Indentions or scars by trauma or previous surgery.

While fat grafting does not replace a face lift, it is a great alternative procedure that will help your skin to appear younger and smoother through a rejuvenating process at the cellular level. Fat grafting is different from a facelift in that it removes years of aging from the face without any risk of scarring or the need for sutures. Dr. Brou commonly uses fat grafting during a facelift when there are volume deficiencies that need correction. It is important to note that fat grafting does not stop the body’s natural aging process.

What happens during a fat grafting procedure?

Fat grafting can be performed as an office procedure with the use of local anesthesia or for larger cases in the operating room under general anesthesia. The procedure involves harvesting the fat from a selected donor site, typically the tummy, thighs or other areas according to what is accessible. The process of extracting the fat is no different from liposuction. The fat obtained is prepared by allowing it to separate through centrifugation then injected in to the treatment area with the use of special needles making sure the fat is distributed evenly, symmetrically and artistically. Fat grafting is a unique option for filling facial imperfections because the material used comes naturally from your own body and is therefore easier to adapt to the injection site and less likely to be rejected.

How much down time should I expect with a fat grafting procedure?

Although some swelling and bruising is likely after the procedure this typically resolves after two to three weeks. The treated area will undergo changes for approximately three months after which the results will become stable or permanent. It is important to understand the grafted fat is alive and will respond to weight changes, so dramatic weight change will produce undesirable changes on the grafted fat.

Are there any risks associated with a fat grafting procedure?

Fat grafting in the hands of an experienced injector with detailed knowledge of the facial anatomy should be safe. As with any injectables, there is a risk of intravascular injection that can produce tissue damage. In some cases, one procedure will not reach your goal and will require additional sessions of fat grafting. Swelling and bruising are to be expected.

Why should I consider eyelid surgery?

For most of us, the the first signs of aging are noticeable in the eyelids. Excess of fat or so called bags under the eyes makes the patient appear tired or as if they have dark circles under the eyes. That is why rejuvenating eyelid surgery is so popular. Eyelid surgery is designed to improve the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids or both.  In some cases, removal of excess fat deposits is necessary to reduce the puffy appearance under the eyes. When properly performed, it restores a more youthful appearance to the eye area, making the patient look rested, alert and rejuvenated. This procedure is often combined with a facelift, brow lift, fat grafting to the cheeks, or Botox and fillers.

Eyelid surgery corrects excessive skin of the upper and lower eyelids that may appear as wrinkled and crepey sometimes hooding over the eyelashes and obstructing vision.

How does eyelid surgery work?

Technically known as a blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery restores your youthful gaze by correcting loose skin and sagging around the eyes.

Incisions made during eyelid surgery are placed strategically so that they remain well hidden within the natural lines and folds of the eyelid region. Even though surgeries may vary, upper eyelid surgery typically involves making an incision in the natural crease and then removing excess skin of the eyelid. Lower eyelid surgery may involve an incision just below the lower lash line, followed by removal of excess skin and fat. Eyelid incisions typically are closed with absorbable sutures, that need no removal, and skin adhesives.

What should I expect during recovery from eyelid surgery?

After your eyelid surgery is completed, lubricating ointment and ice packs will be applied. It is important to arrange for transportation home from the procedure.

Initial healing may include swelling, bruising, itchy or dry eyes and discomfort that can be controlled with medication, cold compresses and artificial tears. You must practice diligent sun protection and use darkly tinted sunglasses when outdoors until the healing process is fully complete, which could take two to three weeks.

What results can I expect following eyelid surgery?

Everybody recovers a little differently. Results should appear within several weeks when swelling and bruising subsides, but it may take up to several months for incision lines to fully mature and blend into your eyelids’ natural creases. It is important to note that eyelid surgery is a significant procedure, and results are permanent and can be appreciated after three months. However, your skin and eyes will continue to age naturally and but protection and proper skincare will improve the life of your results.

Are there any risks associated with eyelid surgery?

Eyelid surgery, as any operation, carries the risk of untoward outcomes or complications. That is why the patient should carefully research the reputation of their prospective surgeon ahead of time. Dr. Brou can help assess your unique health needs and advise you of any concerns to be aware of prior to undergoing surgery. Do you have areas of fat you would like to remove? Dr. Brou specializes in liposuction in Oklahoma City.

Dr. Brou has the medical expertise and experience to help make sure you look and feel your best. If you are considering liposuction in Oklahoma City, let Dr. Brou and his knowledgeable staff assist you today.

Why should I consider liposuction?

Liposuction, also known as lipoplasty, can slim and even reshape certain areas of the body. Liposuction removes excess fat deposits in stubborn areas that diet and exercise don’t always reach. Some of the most common areas treated by liposuction include:

  • The abdomen, love handles and waist
  • Thighs, hips and buttocks
  • Arms, neck and back
  • Calves and ankles

Ideal candidates for liposuction include adults within 30% of their ideal weight, with firm skin and good muscle tone. Patients considering liposuction should be healthy and free of life-threatening medical conditions or diseases which could impair healing.

It’s important to note that liposuction is not a weight loss treatment or an effective treatment for cellulite. Patients with stubborn areas of fat but who exercise regularly are the best candidates for liposuction.

What happens during a liposuction procedure?

Liposuction uses many small, inconspicuous incisions near the treatment area. First, a sterile liquid solution is injected into the treatment site. This solution reduces bleeding and trauma to healthy tissues. Then, a thin hollow tube also known as a cannula, is inserted into the small incisions, below the skin’s surface. Dr. Brou will slide the cannula in a back and forth motion to loosen stubborn fat cells. Those fat cells are then suctioned out of the body using a surgical vacuum.

Additionally, Dr. Brou offers tumescent and ultrasonic liposuction methods, which are not only safer than previously-used methods but also offer a faster recovery time and can produce results that are smoother and unsurpassed by other methods of liposuction.

If you have concerns regarding the appearance and location of your surgical scars, discuss these with Dr. Brou during your pre-operative consultation.

How much down time should I expect with liposuction surgery?

Most patients can expect about a week of downtime after liposuction. You will be able to get up and move around freely, but you will have swelling and some soreness. We will give you a compression garment to wear for the first month to help with the swelling. Often times, patients will wear their garment on and off up to 4 months following surgery. The swelling will take several months to completely taper off and it can feel good to have the extra support.

What can I expect as a result of liposuction surgery?

Just as every person’s body contour is unique, results of your liposuction procedure will also vary. It is important to discuss all of your concerns and goals with Dr. Brou. During your consultation, Dr. Brou will advise you of likely outcomes for your appearance.

It may take weeks or months for post-liposuction swelling to completely subside. As swelling dissipates, your new body contours will begin to appear and develop. It is important to maintain a healthy diet and to exercise after fully healed from a liposuction procedure.

Are there any risks associated with liposuction surgery?

Liposuction is a surgical procedure, and therefore risks are always involved as a result of receiving anesthesia as well as the procedure itself. Dr. Brou can help assess your unique health needs and advise you of any concerns to be aware of prior to undergoing surgery. Potential risks associated with liposuction include pain, swelling, irregular contours and loose skin, skin or nerve damage, infection, blood clots, fluid accumulation, scarring, bleeding or asymmetry, although rare.
